The frequency of replacing the fuel filter depends not only on the mileage of the car, but also on the quality of the fuel, driving style, age of the car and operating conditions. We tell you how to do it right with your own hands

Every modern car has at least four filtration systems: fuel, oil, air and cabin. Together with an expert, we will tell you how to replace the fuel filter with your own hands. After all, the correct installation of the part depends on the serviceability of the engine.

The filter is needed in order to filter out impurities that, along with the fuel, can enter the system. Gasoline and diesel can contain not just dust and dirt, but even pieces of paint and stones. Unfortunately, the quality of gasoline we have is low. Especially in remote parts of the country. Therefore, if you want the car to serve faithfully, and plan to save on a trip to a service center, then we offer instructions on how to replace the fuel filter yourself.

How to change the fuel filter in a car

The better the filter, the better the fuel will be cleaned, which means that the engine will work longer without problems. Fuel filters come in a variety of configurations, sizes, and installation methods. Depending on the make and model of the car, the part costs from 300 to 15 rubles.

Please note that you can replace the filter in a car with your own hands only if a gas cylinder is not installed in the car. If you performed a rework on HBO, then go to a specialized service to replace the part. The gas is highly explosive.

Note that there is no universal instruction for replacing the fuel filter. For example, in modern foreign cars, this node is hidden inside the fuel system. She’s under high pressure. You can work with it only with the help of specialized electronic equipment. Climb yourself and risk damaging the entire fuel system.

But on simple domestic cars, like the Priora (VAZ 2170, 2171, 2172), it is quite possible to manage on your own. We provide step by step instructions:

1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system

To do this, find the floor lining in the car interior. Unscrew the shield with a screwdriver. Pull the fuel pump fuse. Start the car and wait until it stalls – you run out of fuel. Then turn the ignition again for three seconds. The pressure will go away and you can change the filter.

2. Find the fuel filter

It is located at the bottom rear on the fuel line – through it, gasoline from the tank enters the engine. To get to the part, you will need to drive the car onto a flyover or go down into the inspection hole of the garage.

3. Remove the fuel filter

First, disconnect the tips of the tubes. To do this, tighten the latches. Be careful – some fuel will leak out. Next, loosen the bolt that secures the clamp. This will require a key for 10. After that, the filter can be removed.

4. Install a new spare part

An arrow should be drawn on it, which indicates the direction of fuel flow from the tank towards the engine. Fasten the clamp bolt. It is important to calculate the effort here: do not bend the filter and at the same time tighten it to the end. Put on the tips of the tubes – until they click.

5. Ijerisi

Replace the filter fuse and start the engine. Wait half a minute and then turn off the engine and go back under the car. You need to check if the filter is leaking.

Fuel filters in non-premium diesel cars can also be replaced with your own hands. Let’s tell you how to do this using the SsangYong Kyron as an example:

1. We are looking for a filter in the car

It is located under the hood on the right. If you can’t find any part, then open the car’s instruction manual. In modern brochures, the device of the machine is described in detail. If there is no manual, look it up on the Internet – many manuals are available in the public domain.

2. Disconnect the part

To do this, you need a Torex key, also known as an “asterisk” for 10. First, unscrew the clamp to loosen the filter. Unfasten the fuel pipes with your fingers. To do this, press on the latches. After that, we take out the filter. It will also leak fuel, so be careful.

3. We put a new one

Reverse sequence. But it is very important before fixing everything in place, pour 200 – 300 ml of diesel fuel into the filter. Otherwise, an airlock will form. Next, we connect the pipes, fasten the clamp.

4. Ijerisi

We start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds. We pump fuel through the system and see if there is a leak.

We told how the fuel filter in the car is replaced. Maxim Ryazanov, technical director of Fresh Auto dealerships answers popular questions on the topic.

What is the best fuel filter to buy?
— Each brand and model has its own fuel filter. You can buy as an original part or take an analogue, which, as a rule, will be cheaper. In my opinion, here are the best manufacturers of this part: ● BIG FILTER; ● TSN; ● DELPHI; ● CHAMPION; ● EMGO; ● Filtron; ● MASUMA; ● Easterner; ● Mann-Filter; ● UFI. They supply their filters to assembly lines of world brands: VAG group (Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda), KIA, Mercedes and others.
How do you know when it’s time to change the fuel filter?
– The fuel filter is changed according to the regulations of the manufacturer of your car. The rules are in the service book. Depending on the brand, model and type of fuel, it ranges from 15 to 000 km. But there are times when the filter clogs much earlier. Then the car begins to slowly gain momentum, twitch. The check indication may light up, which signals a malfunction of the internal combustion engine (ICE) – in the common people, a “check”. If the problem is not solved, the car will simply stop starting,” Maxim Ryazanov answers.
Kini yoo ṣẹlẹ ti o ko ba yi àlẹmọ epo pada fun igba pipẹ?
– The filter will clog and stop passing through itself the amount of fuel necessary for good engine operation. This, in turn, will affect the dynamics when accelerating, launching, and maximum power,” the expert explains.
Do I need to change the fuel filter when changing the oil?
– It depends on what fuel system is installed on your car. On diesel engines, it is advisable to change the fuel filter at every oil change. On a car with a gasoline engine, I would recommend changing the fuel filter every 45 km or every three years.
