Eugene Onegin: narcissist ti ko lagbara ti itara?

We know the school curriculum in Russian literature, we have written more than one essay. But the psychology of some of the actions committed by the characters is still unclear. We still have questions for the classics. Looking for answers to them.

Why did Onegin fall in love with Tatiana at the ball, whom he had previously rejected?

Onegin is a man with an unhealthy attachment style. It seems that the parents did not indulge their son with attention: he was brought up first by Madame, then by Monsieur. Therefore, Eugene became a «scientist» in a specific industry — «the science of tender passion» and love, which he tried to find in the family, and then in romantic relationships.

The young man is used to getting whatever he wants. Uncle’s inheritance made him rich, love affairs — indifferent. However, balls and amorous adventures became boring, because there Eugene did not find feelings — only manipulations and games. And then he meets Tatyana. Pretense is alien to her, and she confesses her love to Eugene. But Onegin killed hope in his soul, not giving himself a chance for another relationship, not believing that it could be otherwise.

Why then, when he met Tatyana at the ball, did she become a supervalue for him? What «turns on» his feelings? First of all, its inaccessibility. She is now cold with him, and Eugene is trying to melt the heart of a girl who was once in love with him and tick off the list of victories.

Eugene is driven by unconscious envy and greed. Free Tatyana was not interesting to him, a stranger occupies all his thoughts

Secondly, Eugene spends all his strength on the search for new sensations. Boredom, mental numbness, swing «idealization — devaluation» — these are the features of a narcissist. His problem is his lack of empathy. Tatyana’s conquest is an attempt to feel alive again. At the same time, he ignores the feelings of the girl, does not notice her pain and suffering, covered with a mask of indifference.

Thirdly, Eugene is driven by unconscious envy and greed. Free Tatyana was not interesting to him, a stranger occupies all his thoughts.

The problem of the character of the novel is the inability to love. It is split: one part wants intimacy, the other devalues everything. We sympathize with him, realizing that this is not Onegin’s fault, but Onegin’s misfortune. There is a frozen zone in his soul, he needs mutual love to melt it. But he made his own choice. We root for Tatyana with all our hearts: storms rage in her soul, she is hurt and lonely, but she had to get married, and honor is more precious than love.

If Eugene had believed that a sincere relationship was possible, if he had not rejected Tatiana, this couple could have been happy. She, deep and well-read, romantic and honest, would share the tastes and interests of Onegin. He could be her friend, lover, husband, teacher — and he himself would change, for the first time in his life, knowing what real intimacy is.
